A few of the photographs I took during the Sheffield Street Magic Festival on 1-2 November 2014.

I’m pleased to say that we’ve now had payment for this and are able to pay participants. Shop regulars should have received their pittance fee; if you’ve not had yours, call in or give me a ring. This should be a complete list. If your name isn’t on, contact me immediately.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who performed or helped in any way. I hope you enjoyed your involvement and feel that the Festival helped raise the profile of magic in Sheffield.

The 2014 event was much bigger than 2013, spread over two days and with two evening shows and two ‘junior magician workshops’ (despite the organisation  fee being the same!). I’d love to get your feedback and hear your ideas for improvement if we go for a 2016 Festival. Don’t hesitate to comment below, or email me. Thanks.

In fact it’s such a great bill that for a moment there I was tempted to use the adjective ‘awesome’. Phew.

John Archer1Exciting news! Just had a call from the indescribably lovely Steve Faulkner to say that we now have John Archer signed up for our Sunday night show at Sheffield’s Library Theatre on 2 November.

John was the first to fool Penn & Teller on ITV’s Penn & Teller – Fool Us, hosted by Jonathan Ross. Watch it happen here:

John Archer is a former Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year, and one of the best, funniest magicians around today. But don’t just take my word…

“Booking an act for my Dad’s 70th birthday, I wanted a great act and went straight to John Archer – his reputation in the magic world is among the very best. Hysterically funny, and perfectly pitched for the occasion. He made the evening. I’d recommend him unreservedly.” — Derren Brown – TV Magician and Psychological Illusionist.

“You could put John Archer anywhere and he would kill an audience.” — Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller).

“One of the  funniest men I know.” Tim Vine – Comedian.

This has got to be one of the best line-ups for a Sheffield magic show for a long time. Not to be missed! Secure your tickets now from Magick, 82 Broad Street, Sheffield, S2 5TG. Or by ringing us on 0114 276 0482 during opening hours (11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Thursdays and Sundays). You can pay by cash, Paypal or any major debit or credit card.

Steve Faulkner gets wrapped up in his work at the 2013 Sheffield Street Magic Festival.

After last year’s successful debut, Sheffield’s Street Magic Festival is now bigger and better as part of Out Of This World – Sheffield’s festival of Sci-fi, Magic and Horror! Running over two days instead of one, the Festival is also adding a full magical stage show and a special ‘haunted magic’ show to the street performances.

The stage show will be at The Sheffield Library Theatre, on Surrey Street, next to the Lyceum, on Sunday 2nd of November 2014.

The show will be hosted by Sheffield’s own international award-winning entertainer, Steve Faulkner. Among Steve’s impressive list of recommendations are testimonials from Emma Thompson – “It’s great to see someone with real talent. We really loved you!” – and Ian Hislop “His best trick is combining impressive magic with funny banter. Excellent!”

Also on the bill are many of Steve’s magical friends from Sheffield, and negotiations are currently under way to sign up some exciting guest stars. Tickets will be available shortly at £10 for adults and £5 for children under 16. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

For more details and updates as available keep checking this blog or ring 0114 2760482 between 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Fright Night 2013If you caught it last year you’ll need little encourage to catch it again. Steve’s Fright Night Magic Show at Sheffield’s City Hall is a fitting climax to Britain’s biggest Halloween Carnival. You’ll experience a great evening of wonder, laughter and amazement with the finest and funniest from the world of magic. This year Steve is sharing the stage with Noel Britten and Rob James.

Noel Britten’s award winning act has earned him a solid reputation for comedy excellence on the global circuit, so don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to see him here in Sheffield.

“Has to be the funniest comedy Magician since Tommy Cooper… had everyone rocking with laughter.” – The Stage

“Noel Britten brilliantly combines very funny material and visual gags with abundant self-effacing charm.” – Channel 4

Rob James will be presenting one of the strongest magic acts you will ever see. Rob is a master of sleight of hand, presenting inexplicable illusions with humour and flair. From the House of Commons in London to the Magic Castle in Hollywood, Rob James is a veteran of over 2000 performances. Rob performed in Steve’s show two years ago and people are still talking about it!

“Rob James is a personable source of amazement” – Broadway Baby

“A superbly authoritative entertainer” – The Herald

Your host for the evening, award winning magician Steve Faulkner has spent the last twenty years performing his unique brand of comedy magic internationally. According to the promo for the show: “With a focus on highly skilled magic and humour, Steve’s unpretentious and relaxed style will leave you amazed, entertained and wanting to take him home for a cuddle.” Not sure about the last bit, speaking personally, but I can certainly confirm that Steve is one of the most entertaing and engaging performers around. His audience skills are a lesson for any performer.

“It’s great to see someone with real talent. We loved you!” Emma Thompson, Actress

Steve managed to blow my mind and made me re-assess my knowledge of magic.” Matt Helders, Arctic Monkeys.

Steve Faulkner Finds a Card

More information on what I feel we can say was a pretty good first Sheffield Street Magic Festival will follow when I’ve had a few days to recover and gather my thoughts. In the meantime, if you enjoyed the event and would like to see it happen again next year, and maybe in years to come, please fill in the Sheffield Council Survey.

You can find it here.

Preparations for the Sheffield Street Magic Festival on 31 August continue. 5000 flyers are due to be delivered later today (Friday). And here’s our promotional video. Be sure to spread the word!

Many thanks to our magical performers: Mike Baker, Adam Bell, Craig’s Magic, Roger Curzon, Steve Faulkner, Tom Hudson (AfroMagic), Tim Smithies, Damian Surr (Gingermagic), and the people of Sheffield.

More news soon.

Fright NightMany of you will have been to Steve Faulkner‘s regular sell-out shows at The Greystones. On 28 October Steve will be bringing his show to The Sheffield City Hall for Fright Night.

Alongside Steve will be three more top-flight performers (all of whom have appeared on Penn and Teller’s ‘Fool Us’): Graham Jolley, perhaps the funniest mindreader I’ve ever seen, Romany, Diva of Magic, Alan Hudson, who combines situation comedy with magic… “he almost makes magic an enjoyable experience again.”

The whole evening promises to be enjoyable, unique, funny and mind-blowing. Tickets are £12 and available from the City Hall or Arena box offices. Get them now to avoid disappointment!

I have received an email from the Home from Home Ladies Group, based in the Dronfield area. They are holding their annual Christmas party on Thursday 6 December. The email said that they hoped to have some form of entertainment for a short time during the evening.

Obviously, I get many such emails but I thought this one worth mentioning as it could provide invaluable experience for anyone wishing to develop work in the house party area of this business. I understand that this is a popular area in the USA but remains relatively undeveloped in the UK where we tend to concentrate on corporate, hotel and restaurant work.

Sheffield’s magical communicator Steve Faulkner speaking at a major business conference.

The lady also mentioned that at their normal meetings they usually have a speaker and would be most interested to receive details from anyone who could provide this at some later date. She would like suggestions as to the subject of such a talk. I know that several local magicians have done talks for Sheffield University, and various colleges and arts organisations, as well as being featured speakers at corporate dinners and business conferences. Seems to me that this is another area that is ripe for development.

If anyone interested in either, or both, of these opportunities could contact me I’ll see that their details are passed on.

Steve Faulkner’s monthly magic nights at the Greystones, Sheffield, continue to go from strength to strength. On Monday and Tuesday 28 and 29 November you can see a great triple bill featuring comedy magician Noel Britten, gentleman juggler Mat Ricardo and the multiple award-winning Peter Wardell. Tickets are available from www.stevesmagicshow.com.

Don’t shoot off to buy tickets just yet though, we’ve got more great news for you. On the Sunday night before the show nights, through the good offices of Steve Faulkner, the Lounge is hosting a lecture by Peter Wardell.

Peter is the Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year 2010 and Close-up Magician of the Year 2009.  He is the only magician ever to achieve both titles. And 2001 he became International Close-up Magician of the Year. So he knows his stuff.

Peter’s lecture will cover a range of material suitable for close-up and cabaret magic performance. It’s sure to be an entertaning and informative evening that you’d be mad to miss.

The lecture is on Sunday the 27th of November here at The Magick Lounge, 82 Broad Street, Sheffield, S2 5TG. It starts at 7:30 p.m. It’s a Sheffield Circle of Magicians event, extra to the syllabus, so is free to SCM Members and £10 to visiting magicians.
